Waste from Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

What is WEEE?

The amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment (widely known as WEEE or e-waste) generated every year is increasing rapidly in the UK and worldwide.

Every year an estimated 2 million tonnes of WEEE items are discarded by householders and companies in the UK alone. WEEE includes most products that have a plug or need a battery.

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive came into force on 1 July 2007.

Under the legislation, electrical products must be marked with a crossed out wheelie bin symbol in order to help consumers identify that the product must not be disposed of with household waste, but instead should be taken to a WEEE collection point for recycling.
